Chapter 8

The morning flew by. Max scarfed down a full plate of pancakes smothered in syrup, two pieces of toast, and drank a few cups of coffee. He had to prepare himself for a long day that included writing a report for his coworker, but he wasn’t looking forward to presenting it Monday morning.

Antony didn’t eat much, again. A piece of toast lathered in jelly and a spoonful of cereal. Max wondered why he never ate, but didn’t question him.

As they sipped their coffee, they discussed almost everything from Max’s job to Antony’s new life in the city. Max wanted to know more about his abilities, more about where and how Antony acquired his magic, but he didn’t want anyone to overhear them.

Max glanced up at the clock. “It’s eleven?” He couldn’t believe they’d been there for four hours.

“Is it?” Antony turned in his seat. “Wow. Time sure went by fast.”

Max mixed another packet of sugar in his coffee and gulped the rest of it down. “We better get out of here.” He scooted out of his seat and stood next to the table. Antony hesitated, but when Max snatched up the ticket and plopped down a few dollars tip on the table, he finally moved.

“I don’t really want to leave yet,” Antony said as he stole the ticket from Max’s hand. He dug out his wallet, counting up what they owed.

“Too bad because I’m driving.”

Max pulled his keys from his pocket, but Antony snatched them from his hand and dangled them in front of his face. “No you’re not.” He smiled and walked toward the cashier.

What the…Max darted to catch up. “Give me those.” What the hell was Antony thinking? Max nudged Antony’s arm, but the taller man held the keys high in the air, letting them jangle above his head. Deviant. Max wasn’t going to jump for them like some child. Instead, he let Antony pay the cashier and walk outside.

He attempted to grab the keys from Antony’s hand once out of the cafe, but Antony only chuckled and walked to the driver’s side of the car. “Come on. I really need to—” Before he could finish, Antony was already inside the car, revving up the engine.

Jumping inside, Max couldn’t remember the last time he’d sat in the passenger side of his own car. Matter of fact, he never needed to before. “Just go home.”

Antony pulled out onto the road, and Max couldn’t help but notice they were passing by their turn. “Let’s get some ice cream, first,” Antony said.

“Why?”

“I don’t know. It’s a nice day. Kind of warm. Ice cream sounds good, don’t you think?”

“Not really.” But a chocolate dipped vanilla cone, the kind he loved back when he was younger, made his mouth water. Maybe a quick trip to the ice cream shop wouldn’t hurt, as long as none dripped on his seats and he was back home afterward.

Antony glanced at Max. “See, told you ice cream sounded good.”

“Hurry and go through the drive-thru.”

The small ice
